CLICK HERE for the RANCH eUPDATE: Kickin Bull Ranch has Gone GREEN... As of May (2008), all of Kickin Bull's growing methods (cattle, grass & hay, feed supplements) should now qualify them for Certified Organic status - RW & Diane Ruppert are applying for certification through OCIA for 2009. The Kickin Bull Ranch is going GREEN At the Kickin' Bull Ranch our family has over 100 years experience raising beef and tending the land, mostly by conventional farming methods, over several generations. So, why are we going GREEN? After learning about my medical condition and realizing the problems caused by years of conventional farm practices, we decided to go ALL NATURAL. We want a cleaner, healthier environment for our children, our grandchildren and future generations. We returned our calving to the spring to be in sync with nature. We stopped using herbicide sprays in 2003 - now our pastures and hay meadows are kept weed free by hand. We've been implementing rotational pasturing so we can utilize the grass better, and now we have cleaner water, healthier soil, and better feed for our animals. Our animals are free range, raised without the use of hormones, antibiotics or crowded feedlots. Our beef get small supplements of our all-natural, high-protein feed mixture while grazing on pasture - flax seed & oats, which are high in Omega 3's and amino acids, are just part of the mix and we provide a mineral solution that contains all natural sea salt, kelp & seaweed. All this creates a healthier product that is grass-fed, but one question still remained. How do we grow better grass and hay, *without* synthetic fertilizers, and still control costs? The increasing price of chemical fertilizer in 2008 helped us make the decision to speed up our conversion to a GREEN ranch operation. By changing to AgGrand Organic Fertilizer we are improving the quality and health of our soil, the plants and our animals. Organic fertilizer increases the microbial activity in the soil. Increased microbial activity improves the plants ability to take in nutrients and use them more efficiently. Healthy grass and hay makes for healthy beef that we can sell at a premium and, to top it all off, we're removing chemicals from our food *and* reducing our impact on the water supply. Ranch tours are available. We provide Ranch Day for inner city kids - Ranch Day includes a tour (with discussion about where their food comes from), Cowboy/Cowgirl fun and games, animal appreciation, a nature walk and cook-out if time allows. ###
